Recycled clothing the focus of cancer fundraiser

A runway fashion show with a difference kicks off this Saturday.

Fashion runway shows are known for displaying the latest ensembles by designers – but an upcoming event in Hamilton is set to break that mould.

The Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Cancer Society Recycle Runway this Saturday will feature second-hand clothing.

Fundraising manager Catriona Findlay said Recycle Runway is the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty Cancer Society’s newest fundraising event. “The idea was to provide a fun opportunity for ladies to get together with their girlfriends over breakfast while supporting an amazing cause. “

The Cancer Society have been putting this event together since pre-Christmas and have created an itinerary for the morning that involves a casual breakfast sponsored by Mavis and Co, a fashion show featuring volunteers, staff, friends and family as models, and a pop-up shop which will sell donated clothing and accessories.

The society has received more than 1100 donations, from all over the Waikato, for their runway plus accessories, shoes, handbags, and jewellery. Jaclyn M, a Nelson-based boutique has also donated some of their end-of-line stock to Recycle Runway.

Findlay said they had been overwhelmed by the generosity of donors.

“Some of the items we’ve received have only been worn once or twice, so it’s great to be able to give them a new lease on life.”

The Breeze Waikato are media partners and breakfast hosts Camille and Stu will MC the event.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from Eventfinda, the Cancer Society Lion Lodge, or their office in Hamilton East.

The event will be held at the Cancer Society Lion Lodge on February 25 from 9am-11am.

“By getting involved, participants will be helping the Cancer Society to support people with cancer and to fund vital cancer research,” Findlay said..
