Streetwear meets racetrack

Find out how one BMX rider turned her passion into a clothing brand.

In her 10 years as a BMX rider, Courtney Brunton has come to realise one thing – BMX clothing brands aren’t very exciting.

So she decided to make her own.

She drew inspiration from BMX and the Japanese car industry to create Bicycle Motocross, a streetwear brand that isn’t just accessible to riders but to the public as well.

“Other BMX brands are stuff you’d wear around the track and wouldn’t really wear any other time,” she said.

“I want mine to be worn out in public rather than just around the track. I want it to be a mixture of streetwear and BMX.”

Brunton, 18, races at an elite level throughout New Zealand and Australia.

The brand will follow a minimalistic style that can double as athletic and casual wear.

Basic shirt designs will include Bicycle Motocross being written in both Japanese and English.

The making process begins by creating a design and then getting it checked over by importers, before the final products are manufactured in China.

“At the moment we have one shirt to test quality and I can start designing more things,” she said.

“I was thinking about doing custom stuff, so people can put their race numbers on the back or something. We’ll make a few things in bulk and see if they sell. If there’s a demand for more then we’ll make more.”

She says the price of products will vary but t-shirts can be expected to be around $25-$30.

The plan is to promote and sell the brand as much as she can on social media, as well as at race meetings and competitions.

Popular apps and websites such as Tumblr, Instagram, and Facebook will be used as selling platforms.

Brunton is passionate about the brand and hopes it will become more than just a hobby in the future.

She hopes it will be able to inspire others.

“I just want to make something that I can help other people out with,” she says. “If I have a clothing brand then I can sponsor kids and make a race team. That kind of thing.”
