Loose change buys a lot when you’re a student at the shop

Living on a student budget is like “shopping at the $2 shop”, according to a Wintec business student.

Chris Johnston lives in the Wintec Student Village and knows all about living on a tight budget.

He likens it to “shopping at a $2 shop the whole time”.

Johnston said that you are always looking for the cheapest things to please your needs.

“It isn’t the greatest of things,” he said.

“As students we all hate looking at our balance because we are going to cringe when we see it.”

Johnston has a part time job, which makes him aware of how much he can spend each week and also gives him a little bit more freedom with his money.

“A part time job is really good to have when you’re a student as you have access to your own money, rather than relying on Study Link income or having to ask your parents.”

Student discounts are a big positive.

“You may think it’s only a dollar or so, but every dollar for a student is like ten dollars for a full time working adult, everything counts,” he said.

On the negative side, Johnston said that having to limit your spending can get tough and you have to learn to say “no” to things you may want.

Some priorities are paying for fuel, rent and school equipment. Each week Johnston likes to indulge in some extra snacks, like chips, chocolate and juice.

Johnston gives 5 top tips for living on a student budget.

  1. Check your balance regularly, and know when your income is coming in.
  2. Think before you buy: is it a need or a want?
  3. Plan your budget in advance so you don’t overspend.
  4. Always look for the cheaper option.
  5. Look for other opportunities.
