Support at hand for mature students

Life experience gives mature students a jump start over their younger peers.

Age is just a number, right? But with an increasing number of students over 21 starting higher education, what are some of the things they can expect?

First of all, whether you travelled, started a family or are wanting a change of career, your life experience already puts you above your younger peers.

“Being in my late 30s I was unsure about re-attending university, but I have a career path I will enjoy and my social life has never been this good,” Mandy Hunt, a third-year student studying acupuncture at Otago University, said.

Harmony Hopi, a first year Wintec nursing student, recommends taking advantage of any support offered.

“I had a really good daycare/kindergarten and whanau help, which came in really handy,” she said.

Tips for mature students returning to higher education
  • Mature students are offered an opportunity to attend refresher classes.
  • Begin by choosing a course that is right for you. Ensure it’s what you really want to commit to and will work well with your lifestyle outside of school.
  • Get organised. Ensure you are able to attend your classes, even if that means dropping shifts at work. Remember it’s all working towards having a better career.
  • Take advantage of all support provided, both by the school and from family and friends.
  • Ask for help. Chances are people will come to you but if you’re stuck don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Finally, remember why you are working so hard. Your achievements will help you in the future so enjoy yourself.
