Students from a number of Waikato high schools found themselves unexpectedly thrown together in a news quiz final run in a Wintec class today.

The quiz was organised and run by journalism students from the School of Media Arts’ award-winning journalism team.

The competition was a close-run affair with students battling to agree on answers to questions posed by third-year journalism students.

Top team, Salma Dennis, Morgan Garton and Oskar Howell, walked away with free Spark Festival T-shirts, while runners up scored Wintec Press Club pens and note pads.

The students were visiting the Wintec city campus as part of the institution’s Huge Day Out which each year attracts hundreds of high school students from around the Waikato.

Wintec’s Open Day is all about helping students make decisions about their futures, and how to take the next step to get there.

Journalism lecturer Richard Walker said he always enjoyed hosting school students. “This year, however, was particularly good as our students took over the running of the event. All I had to do was sit to one side and marvel at how good they all are.
