A man flattened by a nervous breakdown at age 14 has clawed himself back to health using an unusual method – a love of music.

Student James Brodie, 20, credits music with his survival and  believes life is all about not dwelling on the past.

“I just look forward for the future and that’s what my focus is on. Life is a dream; life is what you make it. What you do with life is your choice. It is your heaven; it can be hell… it depends on choices you make.”

A founding member of alternative rock band Ivy Blue James is fresh from playing the Waikato Winter Show at Claudelands and is now preparing for a joint-headline tour with Wellington based heavy metal group  J Solo Project in late June,  kicking off in Hamilton.

James says music saved me from  misfortunes and helped him connect with the world.

“There is no standard day when you are a musician. In a busy schedule, you may be going for a more technical side which is the new video element, production… pretty much everything. Each day is a separate day, you can’t set a standard day.”

Besides music, James has been involved in volunteering for Future Te Aroha Trust in his home town.

His advice to youngsters and fellow mates? Success won’t come overnight.

“Do your music and do it properly and you will get results. When you get something good, if you get paid anything, don’t get fussy “it’s not a million thousand dollars.”
