A group of Hamilton students baked up a storm as they did their bit to raise funds for a national children’s charity.

Cure Kids painted the nation red in the form of red noses and various fundraisers on Friday, August 21.

Wintec occupational therapy students held a bake sale at the city campus for Red Nose Day and all proceeds went to the charity Cure Kids.

The charity raises funds so medical research can be done to find cures for child illnesses such as childhood leukaemia and other cancers, heart diseases, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, stillbirth, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and type one diabetes.

These children and their families learn how precious life is and endure a fight to survive. Cure Kids fight is to find a cure for them.

In the lead-up to the bake sale, the students made 100 baked goods, including red nosed cupcakes with Cadbury Jaffa chocolates positioned on top, until around midnight the night before the fundraiser.

Their efforts were worth it, as they raised $457.60 through donations and their baked goods sold out during their one and a half hour fundraiser. They also sold Red Nose Day wrist bands on behalf of Cure Kids.

Wintec student Zoe Hall was in charge of the bake sale and recruited her fellow student colleagues to join in with her.

“I work at Rebel Sports in Tauranga and they are a huge sponsor for Cure Kids so on behalf of being an employee I took this on board and I got an amazing group of supporters and colleagues from the course to get involved,” Hall said.

She said a few of the students know some of the Cure Kids ambassadors so it has meant quite a lot to them to do the bake sale.

“To me, Red Nose Day is a special event because I have a close friend who is going through something very similar and very rare, so for me I think it’s really awesome that I can do something for her as well. I think it’s just a great opportunity to be able to do something to help,” Hall  said.

She said with everyone’s help of raising awareness of the charity, then Red Nose Day will get bigger each year.

“Red Nose Day is a great opportunity to raise funds for an amazing organisation that has a huge impact for children and families that are affected by illness.”
