For the past 17 years the Spark International Festival of Media, Arts & Design has given an opportunity for students and aspiring creatives a chance to learn from some of the industries biggest names.

First time festival director Wendy Richdale was delighted to find it was an easy sell to get Spark’s 30 speakers on board.

“I think as creative professionals they’re not the kind of people who just hide away and do it and don’t want to be seen,” she said.

“They’re the kind of people who are ‘yeah, I want to get out amongst you guys who learning your trade’ because they are really interested in passing on and sharing [their knowledge and experience].”

Richdale said that was the core ethos of the festival. She hopes it can help that creative spark burn bright, and maybe a few of this years attendees will be back taking their turn on the stage, passing it on.

Spark runs from August 10 to August 14, at the Wintec City campus. For more information go to www.spark.net.nz
