Bacon and eggs anyone?

Fruits and salads are still on the menu for the rowers of Queen Margaret College, but this year their diet is more varied.

Pancakes, and bacon and eggs are among some of the new  additions to the traditional salads the girls have been served in previous competitions.

On hand to prepare the food is den father and barbecue master Jan Smolnicki.

“I had some time on my hands so I was able to come up and help out,” Smolnicki said.

Smolnicki, who has been attending  the regatta for the past four years, is one of several who have made the trip to help the team, and has found himself as the resident chef.

“It tends to be [just me who cooks the barbecue] for the first half of the week – there’ll be someone else on for the second half of the week.”

Smolnicki has two daughters rowing, Nina and Bella, so takes the time to watch them compete.

This year the den mothers got together to devise a menu with a bit of diversity to give the girls a treat.

“Some of them have been doing it for three or four years so they’re getting quite into it,” he said.

“After the last camp they got together and decided that they weren’t going to offer the same salads and the same menus, and have a bit of variety seeing as the girls are away for the best part of the week.”
