School pride on display across lake

Banners and flags from schools competing at Maadi Cup are attracting a lot of attention across the lake. However, it comes down to who you know in order to get them there.

Across the waters of Lake Karapiro up the steep green banks another competition is taking place at Maadi.

Schools are displaying their school signs and colours, with the number of banners growing daily.

Hillcrest High School from Hamilton, have the largest and most distinctive sign. It stretches in front of a large white house overlooking the lake.Hillcrest Sign

According to Hillcrest rowing members, the large sign was made by two of the students’ dads. It is placed on land belonging to family friends.

When competition began on Monday, only two banners were visible: Hillcrest and Cambridge High. Today, seven school  banners are on display, with  Rangiruru Girls,  Christchurch Boys and Christchurch Girls, Waikato Diocesan and Westlake Boys’ High School added to the colourful lineup.

A mother of a Waikato Diocesan rower, who did not want to be named, said they knew the owners of the land through family friend connections.

She said the idea was a “great one”.

She also hinted additional signs may be added to their green and white flag display.

“There’s something else there going up tomorrow. Watch this space.”

We shall find out tomorrow.
