The popular Māori and Pacifika publication at Wintec, Te Kete Kōrero, is now in the process of launching its 4th issue and is going through some changes in its leadership with a new leader in position for the editor.

As the current editor for Te Kete Kōrero, Donna Lee-Biddle graduates this year, she is passing the editor’s torch to Jason Renes who will take over as the editor for Te Kete Kōrero.

The ‘passing of the torch’ will be done by Lee-Biddle in a goodbye piece as the editor and will welcome Jason Renes as the new editor and Renes will write a piece about becoming the new editor.

Lee-Biddle has been a part of the magazine since the very first day and has written and edited numerous articles for the magazine.

She has managed to juggle her academics and her job as an editor and although she has been tied up, she has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Te Kete Kōrero.

Merissa McLocklan, a writer for Te Kete Kōrero says she will miss writing for the publication and wishes she had written for it sooner.

As a third-year Public Relations student graduating this year, she says, “It’s unfortunate to end that connection with the publication and I wish I had got involved a lot sooner in something like this in my first year because it’s a great way to meet other people and collaborate with other artists.”

Te Kete Kōrero is run by students for students. The success of the publication depends entirely on the involvement and initiative taken by the students.

“The publication has to be supported by the students for Te Kete Kōrero to stay alive. Hopefully it can be merged into an internship or a Journalism programme on campus,” says McLocklan.

The publication encourages students from every field to contribute to it. Passion for writing and initiative is all the publication asks for.

“I would like the publication to prosper and students need to get involved from an early stage even in 1st year – it’s a great way to learn, discover, challenge yourself, utilise time management and be involved in a creative work,” says McLocklan.

The publication has been designed by Jade Ormsby and is available in print and online.
