This annual event is a massive undertaking and could not be executed without the help of students from other disciplines such as the School of Hair and Makeup, Hospitality, Photography and Public Relations.Second year fashion student Ari Brown understands the benefits of working with hair and makeup students; saying “With their expertise they guide us and let us know whether what we want is achievable or not and whether our looks go with everybody else’s (in the show) because it has to be universal”.

The second year students get to show three to five of their own creations in the show and have complete creative control.

The Diploma of Fashion Design and Practice also allow the students to exercise their collaborative ability within the course. The chance to do design papers enhances the student’s skills with graphics and broadens their creative ability.

Brown adds, “the design papers helped me create my own website, Profound People, which is important for young designers after we graduate. Why pay someone else to do that kind of work if we can learn it here?”

Head of Fashion and Interior Design, Julie Ashby, encourages Wintec students from other fields to jump at chances like the Fashion show; “We try to engage as many Wintec people as possible so that they get the experience as well, so they can build a portfolio”.

Wintec has always been a place to encourage collaborations and inter-media papers.

The Bachelor of Media Arts has several different streams; Communication, Moving image, Music and Visual Art each of which has different majors within them.

Fashion Design* will join the Media Arts family in 2015 as part of the degree.

The new Fashion design degree will open up many doors and opportunities for student of other major’s to work together as well as broadens the current fashion umbrella at Wintec.

The annual fashion show will allow Hamilton to see Wintec’s amazing fashion talent but also the collaborative spirit that Wintec holds across all media.
