Renowned fashion photographer encourages students

Derek Henderson is a New Zealand born and internationally renowned photographer who has come to Hamilton to talk about the years he has spent as a commercial photographer now based in Sydney.

Most people in the commercial world know Derek Henderson  as an international  fashion photographer.

“It doesn’t feel like work. I wake up every day saying this is unreal. I’m getting paid to do this. Fantastic,”  Henderson said.

Henderson says he loves to pass on his knowledge to young photographers because he was once mentored  and wants to share what he has learnt.

“I quite like passing my knowledge onto students and coming to Hamilton gives me another chance to check out new places that might spark a new project,” Henderson said.

Photographers need assistants and Henderson says  it is one of the best ways a young person  can start their  career.

“The best way to get into photography is going to study at a place like Wintec and then go to photographers and say you want to become an assistant.

“And carry the gear around; drive the car, make the teas, pick up the props etc,” Henderson said.
