The third-day of Fieldays brings beautiful weather… and 10km of traffic congestion

Traffic is backed up from Hamilton to Mystery Creek as punters making the most of fine weather head to Fieldays.

The traffic is backed up 10.2km from Airport road and all along State Highway 3 north to Hamilton.

Hundreds of cars are bumper to bumper and Fieldays goers’ patience are being tested.

To add to the dilemma, a traffic management staff member said Mystery Creek “haven’t got enough car parks”.

Local Kelly Milne drove from Hamilton East and parked up just before the airport at Raynes Road, and walked to Mystery Creek from there.

“It’s pretty nuts. After about thirty minutes [of waiting in traffic] we gave up and decided to walk.”

Kirsty and Basil Mills left Katikati at 7.45am, arriving at Fieldays at 12.30pm.

“It was bloody diabolical. We could have driven to Wellington!” said Kirsty.

Adam Good from Ohope said the traffic started for him 10-15km outside of Gordonton.

“Bugger it, I think I might go home. There’s only half a day left anyway.”

Fieldays have released a statement saying that the back up in traffic is due to multiple accidents along the route early this morning.

The Hits presenter Blair Dowling arrived to Fieldays late due to the traffic jam.  “Every day I left home at 7:30 and got here around 8 am,” said Dowling, “Today it took me two and a half hours.”

Due to the extreme volumes of traffic trying to make their way to National Field days, police are urging drivers to exercise patience as all roads into the Mystery Creek venue are at maximum capacity.
