Fieldays fun for PM

Prime Minister John Key arrived late morning for the opening of Fieldays and had a stopover at Zespri for a taste-testing of new Kiwifruit varieties.

Prime Minister John Key arrived late morning at Mystery Creek and walked
about greeting farmers and visitors before his  midday opening speech.

Key had some fun at the Zespri Kiwifruit stand at Fieldays and taste-tested some
unreleased varieties of the fruit.

“The taste of it is delicious and it’s a great product and full of vitamin C,” he said.

Zespri chief financial officer Merv Dallis said Key was knowledgeable about
kiwifruit and was interested to see the innovation.

“We [Zespri] gave him the opportunity to taste and to explain to him about
where we are for future varieties and giving him a flavour of us,” said Dallis.

Key said it was great to see how the industry is adapting post the PSA scare,
which destroyed fruit crops.

“It is interesting to see the innovation and it’s great to see the industry
recovering, which is fantastic for exports in New Zealand,” he said.
