The Elite and U19 Cycling Champs kicked off on Thursday with 150 riders competing over four days.

Nicki Martin, the business development manager for Home of Cycling, said riders from the Far North all the way to Southland would be competing.

“This year we host Elite Nationals and Invercargill host Age Group Nationals, and 2015 we will host Age Group Nationals and Invercargill Elite Track Nationals.”

Martin said there was a slight increase in the numbers from last year, but “we would hope to see an increase year on year as more people in the North Island can access the Avantidrome and start a track racing career”.

Tamahere resident Jimmy Thomas is looking forward to experiencing something new this weekend.

“It’ll be interesting to see what it’s like. I mean I’ve never really watched indoor cycling before, but it could be cool.”

Tickets are $5 for children and $10 for adults.
