The Executioner fell to The Giant at the YMCA recently

New Zealand took a pounding at the Knees of Fury international kickboxing event this weekend with heavyweight champion Avau “Executioner”  Faafautua going down in the first round to Aussie superweight Andre “The Giant” Meunier.

Avau got a series of good shots to the body, but was knocked out in the first minute by a series of powerful body punches.

The Australian superweight world champion’s knock out blows left the “Executioner” motionless on the mat after the first minute of the fight.

Fan Laura Church, 32, thought the fight held few surprises.

“I expected him to knock out Faafautua  in the  first round. About a minute and 20 seconds should be enough I thought.”

About 1000 fans packed out the event – up on last year’s numbers at Hamilton’s  YMCA.

Warm up fights started at 7pm, where such fighters as Fou Ah Lam, Matt Vaile, and Nic Lyann excelled.

The crowd went crazy when Natalia Teller and Melody Downs entered the ring.

In a fair fight, Melody Downs  from Team Down club became  the female champion in the 66kg category.

Quade “Magician” Taranaki had a five round fight with Jordon Syme from Grizzly Club for a New Zealand title.

Syme won the title as well as a chance to be on Sky TV show, King in The Ring.
