Resident wants to water down debate

A 22-year-old Hamilton resident is tired of Hamilton arguing over water.

Katie Haggar is “sick and tired” of  the debate about Hamilton’s water.

The retail worker said she often comes home from a day at work to see news coverage and Facebook status updates  about water fluoridation and meters.

“Hamilton voted to put fluoride back in their water. The Council should listen to the people who voted for them. End of story.”

She is pro-fluoride and said that it is time for anti-fluoride protesters to give up.

“The day that these people actually have some strong facts to back them up is the day that someone might actually listen to them.”

Haggar now lives in Hamilton East but used to live in Rototuna  where she imagines water consumption is high.

“There are a lot of houses with nice grass and nice grass needs lots of water. I used to see a lot of people overuse their sprinklers.”

While she feels this is unfair, she does not support water meters mostly because she does not want to receive an extra bill.

“It’s important for Hamilton residents to learn how to conserve water but we don’t need to become like Auckland and start charging for a basic human right.

“Last time I checked we had New Zealand’s biggest river flowing through the middle of the city.”

Despite the media attention around water meters, the Hamilton City Council issued a statement on their website last month saying there are no current plans to introduce water meters.

“Let’s just be grateful we have water,” Haggar said.
