Pooch racing comes to Cambridge

The Cambridge Raceway was host to an array of dogs and at least one sporting star on Sunday when families entered their dogs in races and other canine contests.

Olympic gold medallist Eric Murray  had to settle for silver when he went to the dogs at the weekend.

His dog  Gucci tied for second in his “Pooch Racing” event at the Cambridge Raceway on Sunday.

Canines competed in a range of activities, and families gathered to watch their pooches take part in sprint races along the greyhound track.

Other competitions included the ‘Rex Factor’ talent quest, a pet-and-owner lookalike contest and a kids’ dog dance. Dogs who reached the podium in their events also received prizes from event sponsors.

“There’s probably a little bit of rivalry between neighbours and friends and I know that was the case today,” Murray said. “But I guess turning out and being able to see dogs interact with each other as well  is really great, and I really enjoyed the day.”

Well known local dog trainer and rehabilitator Hamish Young, a.k.a The Dog Dude, was there to help families learn to control their dogs. He also raced a couple of his dogs, who both came in second,  one of them, Jed, tying with Murray’s dog Gucci.

“Today has been a great opportunity to help people with their dog issues and spread the message that leadership is love to your dog,” Young said. “I think a lot of people have really enjoyed the day.”
