Young Glenview family asks for playgrounds

Samantha and Ryath Stockdale have settled into Glenview but wish there were nearby playgrounds to take their daughter to and get to know the community.

Samantha, Ryath and seven-week-old Gwendylan Stockdale enjoy their quiet lifestyle in Glenview, but the couple is frustrated with the lack of playgrounds. Samantha and Ryath  like the area and plan to stay, but wish there was a full playground to take Gwendylan to.

There are three parks in walking distance and Glenview Park is around the corner with one see-saw and two swings. None of these parks host a full playground.

“It would be nice to be able to go outside and go somewhere,” Samantha said. The family are left with the option of walking around the block with Gwendylan as they have limited access to a car and public transport as their next choice.

According to the Hamilton City Council website, there are three playgrounds in Glenview with playground facilities. In the next suburb, Melville, there are three parks with swings, slides and see-saws. Samantha noticed there are schools in the area and said a playground would be a good idea for other parents and their children. Although there is a playground at the school, she does not think it is a suitable option.

“I think it would be a great improvement for people to be able to take their kids. We would get to meet other parents and other kids,” she said.

Samantha said the Glenview Community Centre is a great asset and it has helped the family with their life in Hamilton. She enjoys taking Gwendylan to the Friday play centre sessions where she can meet others in the community.

“It’s really nice, a lot of people go there with their kids,” she said. The centre has also helped Ryath get his licence.

Samantha has lived in Glenview for five months and  Hamilton for two years but does not know who the mayor is or the candidates for the election. Despite this, she plans to vote and would like councillors and mayoral candidates to get to know the communities. “Holding events would get us out there and learn what they are about,” she said.
