Driving Melbourne’s fashion week media

Hazel Squair describes her roles and duties at Melbourne Premier Events.

Writing editorial, hundreds of blurbs, “about me” pages, managing  social media and running a blog is all in a day’s work for Hazel Squair.

Squair is communications coordinator and social media manager for  Melbourne’s premier events.

The Wintec graduate spoke at the SPARK festival as part of the graduate panel. “It was great to be invited. Among the Wintec grads in Melbourne, an invitation to present at SPARK is seen as an indication you have made it,” Squair said.

She started working at Melbourne Premier Events 15 months ago.

“My role was to develop a voice for the brand and that was across everything from website, programmes, editorial, and marketing strategies,” Squair said.

The first thing she worked on was a printed programme.

There are over 100 events within fashion week, and each one needed a description, so she found herself writing more than  100 different blurbs within weeks of starting.

“It’s a lot of work, but I really enjoyed it, it’s heaps of fun,” Squair said.

She said she enjoys fashion week the most because she loves the designers, and not just for the clothes they make, but also she has a lot of respect for what they do.

“When the event happens, the fact that I can go and actually know people and say hi to them, and be a part of that industry, is really awesome.”

Although she loves her job at Melbourne Events she sees herself one day writing for an architectural  magazine, or something in print media.

“You always want more, and if you stop wanting more you get bored, your dreams get bigger the further in your career you get,” Squair said.

One piece of advice Squair would give to graduates would be to keep yourself broad, and say “yes” to opportunities you might normally not.

“Be optimistic and take things in,  strive, be a problem solver, things such as that make you highly desired by employers.”
