The Thunderdykes have a new album in the pipeline which they hope will shake up the Hamilton rock scene.

Rock and roll duo Thunderdykes are working on songs for a new album due for  release next month.

Toma Cullen (guitars, vocals) and Emerald Rose (drums) formed the band in 2011.  They have already released a self-titled EP online.

Thunderdykes will record, produce and engineer the album themselves.

For Emerald this approach is an experience of self-discovery that produces many surprises.

“The album’s shaping up to have different elements and influences,” she says. “We’re growing as a band and as musicians.”

Toma notes the album is in stark contrast to the playful jamming on the EP. “The album will be more emotional, have more depth. There’s more space in an album to explore these.”

Completing a cohesive piece of work is not the only goal for Thunderdykes.

They see themselves as being a part of rock and roll culture and for Toma “contributing to the culture you belong to is the important thing”.

“[It’s] hard for bands in Hamilton,” Emerald says.  “Because of the shift in what’s popular, music is quite sterile and overproduced. We try to avoid this.”

Thunderdykes plan to release their album online and on vinyl.
