Tauranga Boys’ College dogged by bad luck before Maadi Regatta

Tauranga Boys’ College is working their way back after being plagued with bad luck.

Tauranga Boys’ College’s rowing team has had a string of bad luck leading up to the Maadi Regatta.

Coach Brendan Cullum said it started in the Mighty River Junior Regatta. “They caught a crab halfway down a course and they ended up getting third instead of second, and they needed to get top two to get into the A final.”

‘Catching a crab’ is a rowing term for the oar hitting the water the wrong way and getting stuck.

It doesn’t end there though, TBC ran into more trouble at the North Island Secondary Schools’ rowing championships two weeks ago.

“They broke a rudder 250 metres into the race when they were in the lead and they missed out on a semi-final completely,” said Cullum.

Despite everything, things are looking up for TBC, after beating Christ’s College in the under 15 four heat with a time of 7:46.36.
