Sideline comment: Parents speak

Behind every rower is a good parent supporting them. We got their opinion on the delay in the regatta today.

Waikato Independent took to spectators seats at Lake Karapiro to ask the parents what they thought of today’s delay in proceedings.

Derry – “I think that generally the organisers build in enough fat to choose safe enough times to postpone it, especially since there has been some gear failure. The buzz you get from [Maadi] is great, seeing 2000 athletes is amazing – they put in a lot of hard work over the season and there’s a lot of camaraderie around the schools.”
Ruth –  “The regatta’s a big commitment but it’s worth it.”

“[My favourite part] is coming and watching the races. This year has been easier than others, usually I’m helping out the girls.”

“I don’t mind the races being put on hold. I enjoy the whole lot, it’s time off work to watch people enjoy sport. The regatta isn’t hard as a parent, it’s the end of the season for the rowers so it’s hard work for them.”

“[Things being put on hold] are a bit disappointing but you can’t expect the kids to row in these conditions. My favourite thing is my son’s doing well, there’s not really any low parts for me.”

“Rowing’s become very popular. [The wait] is hard for the kids, if it was my first regatta I’d be pulling my hair out but after a few years it’s just what happens. My least favourite part was  getting the two boys’ bags stolen, but we got them back [and] my favourite part is the kids doing well, they work so hard.”

“[The wait] is something we have to deal with, it can’t be controlled  My favourite part is that some of our guys are doing well, it’s my first regatta and it will be interesting to see how it builds up over the week. The whole season of training has been hard and this is the pay off.
