Relay for Life: Hamilton team raises over $30k

A Hamilton Relay for Life team have worked hard to show their support for those with cancer.

A team of dedicated Relay for Life supporters fundraised an impressive $14,200 for the annual Cancer Society event in Hamilton this weekend.

The team, who call themselves Knacckered, won the Davison Shield for raising the most money towards the event, held at AgResearch Ruakura.

The group of 14 work colleagues began fundraising for this year’s event right after they completed the relay last year.

Team-member Shirley Simpson  said the group started doing the Relay for Life in 2007 after a colleague was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Knacckered has raised just over $30,000 towards cancer since they began participating in the event.

To raise money, the team held raffles, a charity auction, and a quiz night.

“This year we tried to make the relay a bigger deal because it’s the 10th anniversary, which is really important to us,” Simpson said.

“We raised $8000 at a charity auction in one night.”

Cancer Society Waikato and Bay of Plenty communications and events assistant Sarah Fitzpatrick said Hamilton had raised over $130,000 for the relay this year, which does not include the gold coin donation paid by spectators.

“All the money raised at the Hamilton and Tauranga relays stays in the Waikato Bay of Plenty area. [It helps] people in your community,” said Fitzpatrick.

The money helps provide support for people who affected by cancer, helps promote healthy lifestyles, and goes towards cancer research.
