Fishing a welcome distraction from competition

While rowing was the main focus at the 2013 Maadi Regatta some students found time to indulge in a spot of fishing.

Rowing is not the only sport taking place at Lake Karapiro this week – you can always do a spot of fishing.

Students from Wanganui High School used their free day on Friday to throw a line into the Karapiro waters where they caught a trout and several smaller fish using some old bread as bait.

Tom Gibson, 14, was joined by fellow school rowers Liam O’Leary, 14, Shaquille McKay, 15, and Poppy Mitchell-Anyon, 16, out on the wharf in what they described as “a relaxing break from rowing”.

“I got a cheap rod from the warehouse yesterday, said Tom.” “I caught a trout before too that was pretty big.”

While the boys’ competition week finished yesterday after they failed to make the finals for their respective classes, Poppy was due to race in the ‘A’ final for the under-16 girl’s fours tomorrow.

Tom said they all enjoyed fishing as a hobby and often went out on the water in Whanganui in search of a big catch.
