Olympic single sculls champion Mahe Drysdale was the star attraction on the second day of the 2013 Maadi Regatta.

Drysdale, who is taking a six month sabbatical from rowing, was on hand to mingle with students and support staff, signing autographs and posing for photos.

As a graduate of the Auckland University, the five-time world champion was stationed at the university tent where people could talk to staff and also have a try on a rowing machine.

Despite never competing at the Maadi Cup, Drysdale admitted to having a particular school who he hoped would do well come the business end of the regatta.

“Tauranga Boys is my school so I would love to see them do well.

“It looks pretty good and as we get on during the week the action should heat up.”

Elite rowers are in short supply at Maadi this year, with most in Australia for the Sydney International Rowing Regatta.
