Organisation offers hope to chained, neglected dogs

An Auckland animal charity is holding an adoptathon in March in an attempt to find neglected dogs safe homes.

Dogs come in many shapes and sizes but one thing remains the same – they all require food, water and shelter.

Not all dogs are given the care and attention that they need, but luckily, one organisation is working hard to educate those dog owners on providing their pets with better shelter, food, water, medical treatment and social development.

A team of dedicated volunteers established Chained Dog Awareness New Zealand (CDANZ),  12 years ago to rescue dogs who are  chained up.  If the dog is too neglected CDANZ ask the owner to relinquish their animal, which is then taken in for TLC and training before fostering.

When the dog is ready, a permanent home is sought.

Linda Evans opened her home to 11-month-old foster-dog Boi.

“It is awesome.  It’s really nice to see such a happy dog that had such a rough start,” says the Hillsborough resident.

“When we get home from work, he’s all bounces and licks. He is really lovely and would be happy being someone’s shadow.”

Boi was a well-loved dog, but his owners did not have the time or energy to give him the life he deserved.  The owners agreed to relinquish Boi to the organisation, where he was put up for fostering.

Although CDANZ provide all pet supplies, food and medical bills for the dogs in foster care, Ms Evans is more than happy to spoil Boi with treats and toys to keep him entertained.

“I’ve chosen to enrol him in doggy school as he is a quick learner but has a little trouble focussing when other dogs are around.

“I’ve chosen to pay for that.”

Next month, CDANZ will be holding an adoptathon where it is hoped many of their rescued dogs will find their forever homes.

Trustee and founder of the organisation, Christine Breen, says the dogs are carefully matched to suitable homes before fostering and adoption.

“It’s a huge thing for a family or fosterers to open their homes up to these rescued dogs.

Without them we just could not operate.”

CDANZ adoptathon is on March 24 from 11am to 1pm at the Banyan Tree, Cornwall Park, One Tree Hill.  Dog guru, Simon Goodall, will be on hand to offer tips and advice.

CDANZ would like to thank K9 Heaven and the Cornwall Park Trust for their help and support.
