A Morrinsville College student has won multiple awards at this year’s Inghams East Waikato Science and Technology Fair.

Nicolette, up against Matamata-Piako schools, studied teat health of cows from four farms in the district.

“I’m very proud. It has been a lot of work,” she said.

Working closely with her two sponsors for the fair, Cognosco and DairyNZ, Nicolette conducted a study that had never been done in New Zealand.

Fair co-ordinator Alison Dawson said 30 projects received  gold, silver or bronze awards with recipients ranging from years 7-13.

“The standard this year was impressive, particularly the winning projects,” Ms Dawson said.

Mrs Dawson said judges come from local schools and industries.

“The overall winner Nicolette Adamson is nominated for selection for Realise the Dream, the national Science and Technology Fair in Wellington, later this year, where only 20 are selected nationally.”

Mrs Dawson said judges look for development of the project, thoroughness of carrying out the scientific process, innovation, creativity, and clarity of presentation.

Judges interview all students and knowledge of their work and oral presentation are important

The chief judge was Jason Morgan, the head of the science department at Morrinsville College.

The fair has both science and technology sections, with prizes including best overall, best in science, and best in technology.

Along with Inghams, the East Waikato Fair is sponsored by Evonnik Degussa and DairyNZ, with support from Morrinsville Kiwanis and Morrinsville College.
