Local chefs supporting breast cancer research

Cuisine for a Cure guests are invited to an eight course meal with matching wines.

Local chefs will be showcasing their signature dishes as part of The New Zealand Chefs Association’s (NZCA) Chefs Love Breasts campaign.

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, local branches of NZCA were challenged to come up with an event to celebrate both this and International Day of the Chef on October 20.

Cuisine for a Cure will be held at the Kingsgate Hotel in Hamilton on October 19 and guests are invited to an eight-course meal with matching wines.

All proceeds from the night will go to Waikato Breast Cancer Trust.

NZCA Waikato branch Vice-President Peter Hood said it was important for both associations to work together to build a public awareness of both groups.

“On one side, a trust that focuses on research and development of a cure for a disease that has affected so many women and families, and the other side, showing that there is a professional group that looks after and focuses on the chef and their industry.

“I wanted the Trust involved because they are local and the funds received went back into local development but could affect lives nationally and, even, internationally,” Mr Hood said.

“Depending on how successful it is, we can think about making this an annual event.”

On the night there will also be live music, goody bags and an auction to raise funds for the breast cancer research programme.

Secretary of the Waikato Breast Cancer Trust Jenni Scarlet said that a dinner like this generates support for their local research programme.

“From the WBCT point of view we need on going funds to support our Waikato based breast cancer research programme, so we hope this great dinner will raise funds for Waikato women diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We are a charitable trust and don’t receive government funding so are reliant on donations and fundraising,” she said.

Cuisine for a Cure starts at 6pm October 19, tickets are now only $100, and seating is limited to 50 diners.

As part of the Chefs Love Breasts campaign NZCA will supply collection boxes and signage to restaurants and businesses that would like to show their support.

All NZCA members working in or running restaurants all over the country are displaying collection boxes in their restaurants from 1-20 October.
