Defence lawyer Greg King criticised media coverage of court cases at Wintec’s Press Club.

Defence counsel Greg King is no stranger to the media invading his workspace.

The prominent lawyer spoke candidly at the Wintec Press Club in Hamilton last Friday.

Mr King discussed the influence the media had on his career and  highly publicised cases, in particular the Ewen MacDonald trial for the murder of his brother-in-law, Scott Guy.

Mr King criticised the use of cameras in court.

“I think it’s a crock,” he said.

“Why should my workspace be invaded?”

Court footage of Ewen MacDonald taken within the first 15 minutes of the day’s proceedings was used by the media and incorporated as a reaction when witnesses were on the stand, he said.

He said the public see these images in their homes and think they’re experts.

“Are we selling truth or are we selling newspapers?” he asked the audience.

He wants journalists to cut out the soap opera and report the evidence that is presented to them.

Guests enjoyed the question and answer segment, with Mr King outspoken and honest with his replies.

On the Ewen MacDonald case itself, he said: “At the end of the day, Scott Guy is still dead and Drover and Hunter still don’t have a father.”
