New Zealanders set to embrace new technology

“Where you guys pick up a pen, I pick up a video camera.”

Media artist Seth Keen believes New Zealanders are innovative and the size of the country works in favour of new technology.

Keen, an ex-pat who lives in Melbourne, teaches new media at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and jumped at the opportunity to return and share his work.

“I think there is a lot of potential to be on the [technological] edge here.”

Keen delved into the world of new media in his presentation at the Spark Festival  today.

Addressing a packed Hub venue, Keen talked about the evolution of his work through video from individual portraits to representations of landscapes.

He described his practice as about having a conversation with his subject.

“Where you guys pick up a pen, I pick up a video camera.”

During his presentation Keen examined the effect of new media on traditional media.

Wintec lecturer Joe Citizen found the presentation “tremendously exciting.”

“He asked the critical questions of the journey we’re on. It validates what we are doing.”

Keen held a workshop to introduce students to new editing software and styles before heading back to Melbourne.
