Anthony Goicolea shares his love of the photographic medium

Jet-lagged New York artist, Anthony Goicolea kept an early morning audience entertained as he showed many of his works while  explaining how and where he began.

Goicolea said his early photographic works were “strongly narrative” and used “repetitive tones” he was interested in.

“I like it when things are indeterminate,” he said while displaying his photo entitled Blizzard.
When he first started out, Goicolea would often shoot using himself as the only model in photos but shoot multiple times to tell a story.

“The idea of ambiguity really interests me,” he said.

Although still jet-lagged, Goicolea ran a photography workshop later in the afternoon.

The workshop allowed students to show their own work, allowing Goicolea the chance to provide advice and tips on manipulating images using Photoshop.

Photography student Tim Carter said that the workshop was “really cool” and opened up some opportunities to improve his work.

“He gave the students a real insight into some of the techniques he used as an artist. I really enjoyed it,” he said.

Student Shannon Rolfe described Goicolea’s work as amazing and creative.

“The thought behind all of his work, every image made me say ‘wow’. How he creates his ideas is just amazing,” Rolfe said.

As one of the SPARK 2012 international guest speakers, Goicolea was back in New Zealand after his last visit in the early 2000s.
