NZ DJ wins Australian music competition

New Zealand DJ Mikayla Roddis recently had some success at a DJ music competition across the ditch.

Hauraki Plains  DJ Mikayla Roddis has spun her way to success, winning the YourShot competition across the ditch.

Roddis and her Australian partner Siana Cork together make up BoatsandHoes and beat out more than 1600 entries from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Each group only had a five-minute interview to wow the judges before the 1600 hopefuls were slashed to just 72.

The girls were put through a six-week crash-course, training at SpinHouseDJAcademy.

“We got three hours a week, which we were freaking out about having never done it before. We were putting in an extra four to eight hours which we paid for ourselves.

“On the last week we spent at least 10 hours at SpinHouse and were up until 3am the morning of the event getting things done.”

Roddis and Cork were on a mission to sell as many tickets to the event, which was held at popular club Birdee Num Nums.

The more tickets sold equalled a longer set time and crucial minutes to impress the judges.

“We didn’t have much of a life in the past six weeks.”

After a two-day Dj-ing marathon, one winner was picked from each room to battle it out in a final showdown.

Due to a tie, Boats and Hoes had to beat out two groups instead of one, playing their 25- minute set in front of a 1500-strong crowd.

“On Sunday, the room that we played in was packed to the door!”

They are set to play at Stereosonic, one of the largest music festivals in Australia alongside big hitters Calvin Harris, Tiesto and Avicii.

They will also make regular appearances at well-known Brisbane club Oh Hello.

“We are pretty excited and have been buzzing for days. When we first got announced as the winners we were in disbelief. It still hasn’t sunk in yet and who knows when it will.”

The girls deliver a diverse set from House, Dance, R&B to Dubstep.

“It makes it a challenge when we come to deciding what to do, but the end result is a good mix of everything.”

Roddis saw the competition advertised on Facebook and was immediately drawn to it.

“I’ve always had a passion for music so I thought it would be a cool opportunity to get back into it. We didn’t realise how huge it actually is until we got in.

“If an opportunity like this ever presents itself go for it. We didn’t for a second think that we were going to win with all the massive talent in the competition. But we went hard at it and now have a lot of doors opening for us.”

Boats and Hoes will compete against the two other state winners for the shot to play at Europe’s iconic ParadiseClub in the Greek Island of Mykonos.
