Piako residents have the opportunity to experience hands-on  what it is like working in an operating radio studio next month.

After a re-launch at the beginning of August, Waikato’s Free FM wants to celebrate broadcasting Waikato-wide by encouraging people to come to an open night on September 6.

Phil Grey, station manager of Free FM previously known as Community Radio Hamilton, said the radio station belongs to everyone.

“Now that we’re Waikato-wide on 89FM we want to encourage people from around the region to make their voices heard on Free FM,” Mr Grey said.

Guests attending the open night will get to experience working in the Hamilton studios, while learning about how they can benefit from services Free FM offers.

The open night will run from 6-7pm from the Hamilton studio in the ASB Building, 214 Collingwood St, Hamilton.

Marketing manager Lara Signal said Free FM broadcasts its brand of radio by, for, and about local interests including youth, ethnic, health, and music shows 24/7.

Free FM broadcasts around Hamilton, to north of Huntly, south of Tokoroa, east of Te Aroha and west of Raglan, including a live stream and on-demand podcast service via freefm.org.nz.

Morrinsville’s Bernie Eva, organiser of the Kiwi Pro-Am Country Music show on Free FM, said he has been told the wider broadcast will probably double the show’s current listenership.

“A different audience in different communities should hopefully encourage new listeners to tune in each week,” he said.

The country music show broadcasts live every Tuesday at 9pm, providing listeners with live interviews and performances, as well as what’s on in the country music scene.
