Casey Williams passes on tips

Silver Ferns captain Casey Williams joined other speakers at Wintec’s all-female “Schmooze” seminar, offering advice to students.

Free cupcakes and a netball superstar proved enticement enough to lure dozens of Wintec students and alumni into the Atrium today.

Silver Ferns captain Casey Williams was joined by Waikato Regional Councillor Paula Southgate, former Student Job Search spokeswoman Jewel Morrison and Dana Biggs from Dress for Success at the all-female “Schmooze” seminar.

The women each offered advice and guidance about job seeking, how to impress employers, staying motivated and dressing for self-confidence.

Williams shared secrets to her success on the court and in life, saying that being prepared is a huge part of getting things right.

“I have 60 grams of lollies that I have to eat after training. If I turn up without them, I can’t train…Preparation is not just about turning up.”

At nearly 50 years old, Ms Southgate is the second youngest Waikato Regional Councillor and questioned whether young people were fairly represented in local government.

Shelly Campbell, 52, a first-year nursing student at Wintec who attended the event, said she found it informative.

“Everything they said was relevant for all of us.”

The audience was encouraged to question the four speakers at the end of the seminar, with many asking how the women stayed motivated.

Williams replied, “I ask myself, what am I proud of, how have I helped other people, have I smiled enough and what was the best thing?”

Ms Southgate added, “Finding humour in a bad situation is always good…and so is chocolate.”
