Large mural planned for city centre

Local artist Kim Paton will transform a large retaining wall in Hamilton into an artwork later this year

The large retaining wall on Anglesea Street will soon be transformed with the backing of Hamilton City Council.

The council accepted a proposal from Hamilton artist Kim Paton to create a mind map around a single “starter” word on the wall during the Spark Festival.

The proposal for a “mind map” artwork was endorsed by the Council and Paton will invite members of the public to make associations and add their ideas through a website.

Mayor Julie Hardaker has endorsed the project. “People in the city have been talking about using the Anglesea Street wall for an artwork for decades.

“This is an opportunity to put a spotlight on a unique part of the central city, and do something creative and adventurous.

“It’s also a chance to see one of our local artists at work, and I’m excited about seeing the outcome.”

Wintec student Taylor Sincock said he’d like to see images from different artists.

“It’s a project that I feel the council doesn’t need to put any money into as I bet there are loads of willing Hamilton artists wanting to cover that concrete mess. It’s been too long.”

Student Emma Knapp agreed it was a good idea. “The wall looks pretty drab and boring at the moment. I think seeing Wintec visual arts student work would be cool.”
