The WPPE has been a successful and popular exhibition in Wellington over the past decade, and organisers were keen for the photographs to be displayed in other cities.

New Zealand Project Director, John Dow describes WPPE as a forum for discussion, a stimulant for creativity, and a catalyst in spreading skills and knowledge.

“World Press Photo focuses on the future, in a rapidly changing world. It stands as a beacon of truth and reality in a world full of conflict, violence, corruption and oppression.”

The WPPE is the result of an annual competition, and the 2012 exhibition is the selection of winning photos taken in 2011 throughout the world.

More than 5000 photographers of 124 nationalities submitted 101,254 photographs for last year’s competition.

The New Zealand Netherlands Foundation is presenting WPPE 2012 in Wellington in late July/August, Hamilton in September, and Napier in October.

In 2011 the WPPE went to a record 105 venues in 45 countries.

Mr Dow said they were pleased about the Hamilton showing. “Wintec are the perfect host partner as they have an excellent central city location and exhibiting space.”
