The 10th anniversary of Sir Peter Blake’s death will be the focus for Hamilton artist David Lloyd as he presents for the second time, at the Wintec pechakucha event tonight.

Mr Lloyd’s photo essay will show his experiences on the Worldwise Amazonas Expedition to the Amazon in 2011 to install a concrete cross commemorating the anniversary of Sir Peter’s death after the adventurer was shot by pirates.

“It is a matter of sharing the images and the experience,” he said.

Mr Lloyd was a primary school teacher for 16 years before starting the surplus trading Hamilton icon David’s Emporium, which he ran for 30 years

Then he studied for a diploma in art with the Otago Polytech. After completing three years of the four-year course he pulled out. “I felt I had gained all I could from the course and built myself a studio gallery. I’ve been doing art using recycled timber and also painting and whatever else takes my fancy,” he said.

During the gallery’s first two years the Hamilton art community showed interest, resulting in David Lloyd being asked to do his first presentation for a pechakucha night at Wintec.

Pechakucha involves presenters showing 20 of their own images in 20 seconds each – while telling the related story to their audience.

Doors at The Atrium in the Wintec Hub open at 6.30pm for a 7.30 start tonight.
