Retro car museum rolls into Dinsdale

Hamilton car lovers mourning the loss of the V8’s will find solace in a local man’s plans to open a 1950’s car museum in Dinsdale.

Hamilton may have just kissed the V8’s goodbye, but all is not lost for motorheads – a  1950’s style car museum and café is set to open soon.

The as-yet-unnamed museum is based around the era of the movie Grease and the TV programme, Happy Days.

What started out as a hobby for Waikato Property Developer, Tom Andrews, is now a large collection of cars and memorabilia from the 1950’s.

Tristar Group Administrator, Mrs Lenore Aitken said they are hoping the museum will bring large groups of car enthusiasts to Hamilton.

“There is no other museum in New Zealand quite like this one.”

The inside of the building is still to be finished and some  of the cars have yet to be restored by Wayne Johnstone.

Mr Andrews’ collection includes vintage cars, motorbikes, signs, oil bottles, petrol pumps and even an old jukebox.

“A collection of more than 100 cars will be available to be viewed over the year.

“These will be rotated so the museum will never be the same,” Mr Andrews said.

Much of his collection has been imported from overseas.

Signwriter and airbrush artist Ron van Dam’s freestyle artwork covers the walls of the cafe.

The museum is located on Railside Place in Dinsdale.
