It’s been seven years in the making but Wintec has finally opened its new marae complex.

The dawn ceremony on Monday kicked off at 5.30am with the marae in darkness. The Maori King, Tuheitia, led the people through each of the three buildings on the complex in order to bless them before the powhiri began.

The marae has been named Te Kopu Mania o Kirikiriroa.

The marae has been named Te Kopu Mania o Kirikiriroa.

As each of the pou were lit up alongside the marae, the spectacular beauty of the complex came into full effect.

Some staff and students as well as guests were among those who attended the opening.

Casey Lambert-Ehu 23, studying under Te Whiuwhiu, Maori counselling services, at Wintec said: “It’s awesome to be a part of the experience and I’m glad Maori students have a place where they feel as though they belong, that is theirs, but most importantly they are free to embrace their culture.”

Carver Warren McGrath, an ex Wintec student was happy with the end result of his work. His carvings are based on the late Maori Queen, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu.

Speakers for the visitors during the powhiri have said that even though it is a Kuratini, place of learning, everyone was there to support Wintec with the occasion.
