National Cupcake Day gets SPCA supporters reaching for their cake mixers

The aprons are on for a no-holds barred SPCA cupcake bake-off in the Waikato.

Animal lovers will be turning out extreme cupcakes – and pupcakes – during the next week to raise funds for the SPCA.

The annual Cupcake Day, (Monday, 29 August) last year raised $7000 for the Waikato SPCA.

Businesses, groups and individuals are encouraged to bake and sell cupcakes in all shapes, sizes, and flavours to raise money for the thousands of rescued and abandoned animals cared for by the animal welfare organisation.

Jan Thomson, a volunteer at SPCA says signing up is easy.

“Everyone’s face lights up when they see cupcakes. A lot of people take them to their workplace or their friendship groups and they organise it for themselves and then we get the profits from the day.”

Competitions for the most creative and most extreme cupcake eating are to be found on the website and people can get ideas from past events as well.

There are even recipes for the animals in your life called the “pupcake recipe”.

“People can come in and also get colouring in pages for themselves or schools. These can also be downloaded from the website,” says Jan.

“It’s just one of those really fun things that have taken off over the last three years and everyone loves it.”
