Wintec graduate returns home for Bank of China job

Mandy Jiang went to a bank recruitment interview for experience – and came out of it with a job in her home city of Jinan.

Wintec graduate Mandy Jiang has landed a job at one of the world’s top banks.

The 22-year-old will start work at the Bank of China in two weeks’ time.

The bank’s selection process narrowed 300,000 applicants down to 10,000. It involved a recruitment exam as well as individual and group interviews.

The job is in Miss Jiang’s home city of Jinan in North China. Her position will be assigned during the training period.

She was selected over applicants with Masters degrees from top Chinese universities.

Miss Jiang did a Bachelor of Business Studies majoring in marketing at Wintec. She is midway through her Masters at Waikato University.

She thinks her time in New Zealand contributed to her success. The Bank of China does a lot of international business and wants people with overseas experience.

She went to the recruitment exam for experience.

“I didn’t think I would pass the exam… I thought I’d go back and finish my Masters degree but this changed my life.”

She says she might return to New Zealand one day to complete her study.

“I still have a dream in New Zealand but some things such as family make me want to go back to China.”

Her grandmother who brought her up has cancer.

“She’s very ill, so this is an opportunity for me to look after her.”

Miss Jiang says her grandmother is counting down the days until her return.

“Every day she counts the days left. Time for old people is very, very precious.”

Miss Jiang worked long hours at a Hamilton restaurant to support herself throughout her study.

She kept the money her father gave her for living costs in the bank and returned it all to him this month.

“He thinks it’s too hard for me to study and work at the same time… but I know I have the ability to support myself.”
