The Fieldays has five different food court areas that sell hot dogs, bread rolls, pies, whitebait fritters, sandwiches, fizzy drinks and more.

But the hottest seller of all: Hot chips.

Kai kart coordinator Roger Iliffe has led a group of volunteers from Te Awamutu Lions Club at the Fieldays for roughly 32 years. He said canola oil was the special ingredient and it seems to be working.

Te Awamutu Lions Club puts all their proceeds back into the community offering grants to deserving students.

Road Runner Catering Owner Doug McCarthy has been coming to the Fieldays for 31 years and said his food stall goes through about 35 bags of chips, each bag weighing 9kg.

He said that his ovens give them an advantage over the competition.

“We have enough heat to cook them crisp. Chips are a hard product to cook in bulk if you don’t have the heat.”
