Bull is an impressive breeding machine

The size of Tsar’s Gold at least week’s Fieldays proved a show-stopper.

Big beast Glenlea Downs Tsar’s Gold is an impressive breeding machine with a 100 per cent conception record.

Last year the bull mated with around 50 cows over six weeks.

Society member Leigh Needham, who has worked with him since he was born, said Tsar’s Gold needed a lot of endurance to do his job.

The striking four-year-old was on show at Fieldays to promote the Gelbvieh breed of dairy stock.

“He is a real show stopper,” said Ms Needham.

Tsar’s Gold has won five supreme champion animal awards and as a breed the Gelbvieh’s have won every major championship in the country.

The mammoth bull looks menacing but Ms Needham said it’s actually the opposite.

“We brought him to Fieldays to promote what a mild temperament the Gelbvieh breed has.”

Traditionally the breed was a jack of all trades used for milking, meat and for pulling around the farm.

Now days they have been specially bred for beef.

Prices for a Gelbvieh start at $2000 but lucky Tsar’s Gold will be living out the rest of his days on the Glenlea Downs farm.

“He won’t be going anywhere,” said Ms Needham, “Eventually when he dies we’ll bury him on the farm.”

Gelbvieh’s usually live to around six to eight years but can live up to 15.

“At four years he is just hitting his prime,” said Ms Needham.
