Child Cancer buskers set the beat for Hamilton Music Month

Coffee lovers at popular café Dora’s were entertained with a Persian lute as part of fund raising for Child Cancer in Music Month.

Collingwood Street’s tiny Dora’s café in central Hamilton is usually crowded – but Music Month saw the entertainment spilling onto the pavement and beyond as part of The Big Busk 2011.

New Zealand Music Month’s latest initiative saw local bands and well-known Kiwi artists take to the streets in cities throughout New Zealand to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

Nick Douch, drummer of New Zealand band EQWANOX, organised the Hamilton event and describes it as “a bit of fun for a good cause”.

“I do a lot with child cancer anyway and I know the main organiser so it just seemed like a good idea.”

The Wintec music graduate “scraped together a band for the day,” with The Lookie Loos guitarist Daniel Reece and singer Megan Berry showcasing their talents.

Other well-known artists who participated in the event nationwide were Luger Boa, Black River Drive and Avalanche City.

Wintec music tutor Kent MacPherson took the opportunity to branch out with the Baglama Saz, a Persian lute.

“I don’t get the chance to play this instrument a lot. I don’t perform very often so it’s quite good to get out and do something.”

MacPherson said he was happy to support the foundation, especially as his mother died of cancer.

“This is something that I always give money to and support,” he said.

Fundraising will continue through May.
