Auckland Harbour bridge to open for cyclists for first time

Thousands of cyclists are gearing up to ride the Auckland Harbour bridge later this year.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has granted cyclists permission to ride across the harbour bridge this November for the first time.

Andrea Gilkinson, local member of the Devonport-based cycling group Xpressos, says riding over such an icon is something she has always wanted to do.

She says a women’s beginner cycling group she leads within Xpressos, will be training for the event.

General manager of the company organising the event, ClipOn NZ, Callum McNair, says after two years of planning it is great to see the event near fruition.

He says the event aims to change the way people think about cyclists and to promote cycle safety and less traffic congestion.

NZTA State Highways Manager Tommy Parker compares the predicted size of the event to the Auckland marathon and says an event of this size is an exciting opportunity for the cycling community and an excellent chance to showcase Auckland.

He says the event is a trial but if successful it could be a great addition to Auckland’s events calendar.

The two outer southbound clip-on lanes of the bridge and the northern busway will be temporarily closed to vehicles on November 13 so the cyclists can cross safely.

There will be four events, varying in distance up to 150km, with options suitable for both adults and children.
